Creative modern European cooking amid Gothic extravagance

With turrets, gables and 37 acres of well-tended grounds, Oakley Court is a prime example of a Victorian Gothic castle. As you would expect in a hotel of this standing, there's golf, tennis and swimming on tap, or pampering in the treatment rooms. The half-panelled dining room, with its crisply clothed tables and formal service, is the place to head for creative modern British cooking. The dinner menu kicks off with ‘small plates’ – poached Bradmoor Farm duck egg, roasted onion and thyme consommé and wild mushrooms, or soy and lemon squid with carrot, mouli, apple and peanuts. Followed by ‘big plates’ such as pork loin, kitchen garden cabbage, young onion, almonds and burnt apple puree, or lemon and thyme pearl barley risotto with black truffle and crispy cheese.
