At this Thames-side hotel consisting of several buildings clustered around a cobbled street, the menu is an appealingly varied slate of contemporary ideas. Starters take in perfectly cooked scallops complemented by spicy tomato salsa and a balsamic reduction, accompanied by pea shoots, as well as a duo of duck terrine (foie gras and leg) with spiced plums and Grand Marnier dressing. To follow there might be lamb noisette in a herby broth with braised baby gem and fondant potato, or darne of salmon with marinated peppers, aubergine and courgette, lime-mashed potatoes and salsa verde. End with an attractive-looking pudding like a trio of pannacottas (vanilla, chocolate and strawberry).
