Handy for the racing or for a day out at Windsor, Coworth Park looms above its slab of rural Berkshire in shimmering wedding-cake white. A Georgian mansion house on the grander than average scale, it's surrounded by meadows full of wildflowers and ancient woodland, and has a bevy of amenities to offer, from deep tissue massages to polo. It also has a very pretty dining room with a design of oak foliage in glass and a view over the rose terrace. Here, a discreetly modernised take on country-house cooking is offered, with a seven-course taster and Best of British menus supplementing the main carte. The last deals in the likes of a very grand caviar tart with white crabmeat, yuzu and cucumber to start, ahead of steamed turbot in champagne sauce with truffled cauliflower, or perfectly tender short rib of 60-day salt-aged beef with its bone marrow, spinach and onions for main. Finish with vanilla mousse, served with pineapple, lime and coconut, or perhaps a serving of Lincolnshire's Cote Hill Blue cheese with fruitcake and pear.
