Traditional country-house dining by Oban harbour

Built for the Duke of Argyll in 1780, the Manor House sits in a commanding position overlooking the harbour at Oban. Half-panelled walls and original oils set a heightened tone in the dining room, where a lighting level to encourage intimacies prevails. Fine regional Scottish produce is celebrated in menus that aim for a soft-focus country-hotel approach rather than anything too offbeat. First up might be sweet potato tortellini with carrot and orange purée in cumin butter, then roast brill with cauliflower fritters and dried grapes, or guinea-fowl in bacon and thyme sauce with champ. Iced lemon meringue parfait with raspberry sorbet delivers a big finishing hit.
