It's not just the colonnaded entrance that makes a good first impression at this white-painted coaching inn. The simplicity of the menu hides some serious skills from the kitchen, whose dishes are big on flavour. Add great local sourcing, including foraging and home smoking, and a real passion from the chef-proprietor and you'll find you've discovered a little gem. Home-made duck liver pâté, for example, comes with Cointreau jelly and home-made sourdough bread, and a leg of Aberdeenshire lamb arrives with home-cured pancetta as well as pea shoots and wild leeks. To finish, forced rhubarb souffle, rhubarb and thyme ice cream and rhubarb anglaise delivers a wonderful intensity of flavour.
