Set against a stunning backdrop of Berwyn Mountain and originally built as a drovers’ inn, the West Arms has been offering visitors a warm welcome for the past five centuries, and this continues with new owners at the helm. Slate flagged floors, low beams and an original inglenook fireplace add to the charm of this lovely old free house, where ales are on tap in the lounge bar. In summer, the riverside gardens are an ideal spot for lunch, from a menu packed with local produce – starting with smoked mackerel, crayfish and watercress salad; or white pudding fritters, pancetta, apple and mustard dressing. Then, on to a main dish of medallions of Welsh beef, dauphinoise potato, asparagus ravioli, wilted spinach and Madeira sauce; or pan-fried chicken breast, coconut and vegetable danska and wild basmati rice.
