Set against a stunning backdrop of Berwyn Mountain, originally built as a drovers’ inn, the West Arms has been offering visitors a warm welcome for the past five centuries. Slate flagged floors, low beams and an original inglenook fireplace add to the charm, ales are on tap in the lounge bar. In summer, the riverside gardens are an ideal spot for lunch, from a menu packed with local produce. Start with smoked haddock, leek and mussel chowder; or venison and pork terrine. Then, on to a main dish of medallions of Welsh beef, dauphinoise potato, mixed greens; or monkfish tails wrapped in pancetta, sweet potato, celeriac and a lobster, shellfish sauce.
