Just behind the green in this internationally-known picture-postcard village is the Crown & Trumpet, a traditional, 17th-century, mellow-stone inn. The classic beamed bar is just the place for a pint of Stroud Brewery’s Tom Long or Stanway Brewery Broadway Artists, or you can take it out into the peaceful patio garden; a winter alternative is a glass of mulled wine or a hot toddy by the fire. Classic, home-made pub food is available at lunch and dinner – try devilled whitebait; a home-made beef and Guinness pie; chilli con carne; venison sausages with mash; or fisherman’s pie. There’s musical entertainment every Friday and Saturday evening, and each Thursday it’s their jazz and blues evening.
