James and Ashley Wilsey saved this village pub close to Marlborough from being turned into housing and they have breathed new life into the place since reopening it in 2012. Roaring fires and a garden with boules pitch make this a family and dog-friendly venue surrounded by excellent canal walks and cycle paths. Chef James used to work in notable London restaurants and almost everything on the menu is made in-house. A starter of cauliflower soup and Perigord truffle butter might be followed by seared fillet of bream, chorizo-braised borlotti beans, rainbow chard and purple sprouting broccoli.
