Close to two of Wiltshire’s famous white horses, this 16th-century free house lies in the heart of the Vale of Pewsey between Salisbury Plain and the Marlborough Downs, and is a 15-minute drive from the stone circles of Avebury. The bar maintains its original character with low beams and oak panelling, and you can expect local and guest ales on tap. The menu of home-made classics could list warm goats’ cheese with beetroot and walnut salad; followed by roast pork belly; ale-battered haddock; or Stokes Marsh farm steak. The chef’s daily specials add to the choice.
