Superb views of the Box Valley can be enjoyed from this 300-year-old pub, from where you can also see Solsbury Hill. A display of Bath stone-mining memorabilia bears witness to the years Brunel’s navvies spent driving the Great Western Railway through Box Tunnel (spot the bar’s replica fireplace) deep beneath the pub. The resultant honeycomb of Bath stone workings attract potholers and cavers, who slake their thirsts on local ales and ciders, and replace lost calories with venison noisettes with port and rosemary sauce; poached cod loin with garlic mash; or something from the comprehensive vegetarian selection. ‘Mini ale weeks’ are held throughout the year – check with the pub for details.
