A mile north of the bustling market town of Marlborough you'll find this pub, tucked away in rolling downland. The free house’s name reflects the racing heritage of the Berkshire Downs (whose western boundary is on the border with Wiltshire). Framed silks of leading racehorse owners and jockeys adorn the walls and the pub offers local Ramsbury ales, fine wines and an informal dining experience. Sample evening dishes run along the lines of mackerel pâté, chicory salad, ginger and chive dressing; fillet of beef with Stilton sauce and potato cake; or Barbary duck breast, red cabbage, sautéed potatoes and thyme jus and finally, vanilla crème brûlée.
