Named after the original hunting lodge built for King John, this brick-built Victorian inn luxuriates in its location on Cranborne Chase deep in stunning countryside outside Shaftesbury. Its airy, open-plan bar and dining areas have a crisp country feel, featuring rugs on quarry tile flooring, pine tables, snug alcoves and winter log fires. The contemporary dinner menu offers starters like devilled venison liver and kidney with fried bread; cauliflower, mustard and gruyère soup; or crispy hare risotto. For the main course the choices are just as tempting – brill fillet and brill ravioli, cherry tomatoes, saffron velouté; twice-baked Westcombe Cheddar soufflé; and smoked tenderloin of pork, Mona Lisa potato mash and black pudding. Finish perhaps with apple doughnuts, mulled cider and toffee sauce; or lemon posset and shortbread.
