On top of the rolling South Downs, just outside the village of Slindon, this 17th-century pub is a an ideal stopping-off point on a day out in the country. It has been praised for its friendly atmosphere and for generous portions of food. Outside are large gardens and a courtyard, inside is an open-plan bar and restaurant, warmed by log fires. Daily-changing bar meals are marked up on the blackboard, and may include a home-made pie (four flavours on offer); fresh fish dishes; and a snack menu that includes sandwiches and ploughman's. A skittle alley and function room are also available.
