On top of the rolling South Downs, just outside the village of Slindon, this 17th-century pub is a an ideal stopping-off point on a day out in the country. It has been praised for its friendly atmosphere and for generous portions of food. Outside are large gardens and a courtyard, inside is an open-plan bar and restaurant, warmed by log fires. Daily-changing bar meals are marked up on the blackboard, and may include home-made chicken and ham pie; lasagne; or beer-battered fish and chips. A skittle alley and function room are also available.
