Rescued from closure in 2011 by the Newbon family, who have completely revitalised this lovely large-village pub; its late 18th-century interior looks as good as promised by its white-painted exterior. It feels right too, not least thanks to a progression of Sussex breweries making their mark in the bar, and a carte offering slow-roast pork belly with braised cheek; and cod, Bombay potatoes and spinach. Typical light bites might be Welsh or buck rarebit; and a classic 10 oz sirloin steak.
