Named to commemorate its one-time owner John Wisden, the first-class cricketer and creator of the famous sporting almanac, this attractive whitewashed pub sits in beautiful gardens behind Goodwood. Dating to the 16th century, with an inglenook fireplace, the inn has hardly changed over the years. Well-kept real ales include Arundel Sussex Gold, while the blackboard menu offers lunchtime sandwiches and traditional favourites, home-cooked from locally sourced ingredients. Look for the likes of a trio of Old English sausages, mash and onion gravy; sizzling pork, pear and parsnip skillet; and confit duck leg, bubble-and-squeak with spiced orange dressing. Children are welcome and there’s a menu to suit younger tastes.
