Visit the family-run Crabtree and you’ll be following in the footsteps of author and poet Hilaire Belloc who was often to be found here. The inn, originally built in 1539, is located in beautiful countryside which is where the pub sources the vast majority of its produce. Trusty local companies supply meat from high welfare farms and the daily caught fish and shellfish come via the harbour at nearby Shoreham. Start perhaps with confit duck and pear pastille, blackberry gel, apple crisp, followed by wild mushroom and leek tart, vermouth cream, truffle; or pan-fried monkfish, mussels, coriander, curry soup. The enticing dessert menu might include treacle tart, clotted cream and salted caramel.
