Dining pub in downland village

In a pretty South Downs National Park village and close to the remarkable Devil’s Dyke, this pub occupies a lovely spot that’s handy for glorious downland walks. In summer, the wonderful garden boasts excellent barbecue facilities and serene rural views. Beyond the handsome exterior, the contemporary decor inside is an effortless blend of solid oak floors, old beams hung with hop bines and sumptuous sofas. In the bar, Harvey’s Sussex Best Bitter sits alongside Westons cider, and the accessible wine list includes New and Old World wines with up to 14 by the glass. The menu changes seasonally and is driven by local produce. Booking ahead for meals is advised. Gregarious grazers will appreciate the shared charcuterie platter of Serrano ham, Milano salami, pastrami, piccalilli, caper berries and olives with warm ciabatta; then mains could be beef, mushroom and ale pie; Royal Oak fish pie; twice baked pork belly; or hand-made Sussex beefburger. Puddings are no less tempting – perhaps the trio of bananas could round off an excellent meal.
