This glorious Grade II listed building is one of the most famous pubs in Newcastle. The façade is Victorian, there’s an elaborately panelled entrance and original stained glass windows, and the music comes courtesy of a 1940s gramophone. You can get a freshly made sandwich and a packet of crisps, but beer’s the thing here. Check out the well-kept real ales; Allendale Pennine Pale, Hadrian Border Tyneside Blonde or Blackgate Bitter, and three guest ales.
