Contemporary decor and traditional lines blend easily at this mature dining inn in the Mole Valley. In earlier times it was the village courthouse; it also features in the Sherlock Holmes story The Adventure of The Speckled Band. Local drinkers take summer shade in the peaceful garden and quaff beers from Surrey Hills brewery. Fulfilling meals are at the heart of the business, with a core menu available all day, supplemented by lighter bites available to 5.30pm in both bar and restaurant. A starter of ham hock, balsamic onion and parsley terrine with piccalilli and toasted sourdough then Keralan roasted vegetable and coconut curry with brown basmati rice are tempting examples of the modern cuisine. Children are welcome in the restaurant area until 7.30pm, and occasionally there are themed evenings and live entertainment.
