Delightful East Anglian pub with a loyal following

At a glance

AA Pick of the Pubs
Bar menu

In the valley of the little River Lark and at the hub of easy country rambles, this centuries-old pub oozes character. A series of cosy rooms splay from the huge hand-thrown brick chimney breast, radiating below generous beams that were cut 400 years ago. The bright, spacious interior makes a great space for the display and sale of artworks by local painters. With a large, copper-topped bar, part-tiled floors and restful decor, you feel instantly at home, while nostalgic touches like the Tuck Shop – which sells ice cream, sweets and chocolate – appeal to adults and children alike. Highly regarded chef-patron Gary Kingshott synthesises wholesome contemporary dishes from local produce, receiving the accolade of one AA Rosette for dishes such as steamed hake with samphire and butter sauce; or pork and harissa sausage with saffron mash. Finish with butterscotch and raisin tart, then ponder the rest of the day in the huge grassy beer garden.
