If you thought bizarre pub names were a late 20th-century fad, think again. Originally called The Case is Altered, this 16th-century pink-washed smugglers’ inn became The Parrot and Punchbowl in 1604 when Aldringham was a centre for smuggled contraband. East Anglian-brewed ales from Adnams and Woodforde’s, and Suffolk’s Aspall cider all feature in the bar line-up. The good-value menu offers chicken liver pâté with chutney and toast; steak and kidney pudding; lasagne; bangers and mash; and steaks. Daily specials and vegetarian meals also have very reasonable price tags. There are roasts on Sundays and quiz nights.
