The pub’s name derives from an erstwhile White Rose landlord, although the heritage of this edge-of-town pub opposite Rugeley’s Trent Valley railway station is lost in the mists of time. Some believe it was a tavern built to serve the new railway in the 19th century, and it’s certainly been a meeting place for farmers and soldiers. Walk through the doors today to find a panelled and wood-floored dining pub with eclectic furnishings including faux Stubbs paintings. Real ales from Blythe Brewery include Palmer’s Poison, which commemorates the town’s very own 19th-century mass murderer. Seasonal menus using top Staffordshire produce are changed regularly, but an indicative choice could start with Yorkshire crab, prawn and salmon cocktail; continue with a fillet of lemon sole stuffed with green beans and wrapped in Parma ham; and finish with traditional bread and butter pudding with vanilla custard.
