Close to the Royal Troon Golf Course and one of Scotland’s oldest churches, this charming 17th-century free house has been run by Martin and Marnie Thompson for over 25 years. Log fires burn in every room of the former coaching inn and the interior is decorated with the work of local artists. The varied menu offers plenty of choice, with dishes like haggis, neeps and tatties with sweet whisky cream; fillet of haddock mornay; gammon steak with egg or pineapple; pan-fried lamb’s liver with red wine and onions; or blackened Cajun salmon.
