Three hundred years old, and run by Isabel Thomas and Mark Hilyard, this lovely pub occupies an enviable position amidst the sweeping willow trees in its tranquil beer garden. The beer pumps belong exclusively to West Country real ales, such as Butcombe, Cheddar and Yeovil, while from the wine list, 10 are sold by the glass. Locally-sourced food, much of it organic and free-range, feature on the AA-Rosette menus. Typical starters might include wild mushrooms on toast; or ham hock terrine, capers, parsley and real ale chutney. Mains could include roast topside of beef with Yorkshire pudding; roast leg of lamb with roast potatoes; pan-fried chicken supreme with leek and pancetta cream sauce; or mushroom Wellington. Finish with blueberry and apple crumble or a board of West Country cheeses. Five spacious, well-equipped bedrooms complete the picture.
