Named after William Blathwayt, the 17th-century politician who established the War Office as an official government department. Blathwayt effectively became the country’s first Minister for War; his National Trust country house a few miles from the pub is known for its deer park. With its welcoming approach to dogs, children and muddy boots, this is a proper pub serving anything from a pint of Otter to a plate of Blathwayt steak and ale pie. Mulled wine is supped around log fires in winter, while barbecues in summer are prepared in the large garden, which has a children’s play area and overlooks Bath Racecourse.
