Parts of this rambling 15th-century building were once the guildhall, but it became an inn in 1830. The bars are heated by log fires and offer Butcombe ales; there's also a skittle alley and large terraced garden. All the food is home made, ranging from pan-roast stuffed chicken breast to beef bourguignon, with burgers, jacket potatoes and a ploughman’s offering a lighter option. Opposite is the medieval King John's Hunting Lodge, so christened in 1905 by an owner who chose to ignore the fact that John had died over two centuries before it was built.
