An elegant Georgian-fronted house with lots of character, this establishment was first licensed in 1686. Between 1962 and 1985 it was owned by the man who developed Ilchester cheese, and its association with good food continues: chef-proprietor Brendan McGee takes pride in producing modern British dishes such as pigeon with cauliflower purée; chicken liver pâté with red onion marmalade; Dexter beef steak cooked in ale with creamy mash; and medallions of venison, pumpkin purée, peppered sprouts, dauphinoise potatoes and red wine jus. There is a lovely walled garden.
