A handsome Georgian inn with two later additions, whose successively lower rooflines help to create an attractive architectural grouping. Rising opposite is Grinshill Hill itself, source of the sandstone used for the surrounds of 10 Downing Street's famous door. Old Prickly (brewed to support the British Hedgehog Preservation Society) and Old Speckled Hen real ales introduce a wildlife element in the traditional, part-panelled and fire-warmed bar. Meals are served in several dining areas both inside and in the garden, the short menu including vermouth-cured salmon; cheeseburger; pie of the day; sausages and mash; pan-seared mackerel; and butter-poached celeriac with wild mushrooms. Conclude with chocolate brownie and home-made ice cream.
