The exterior of this 16th-century coaching inn pushes the description 'creeper-clad' to its limit, and delightful it looks as a result. Birmingham to Ludlow mail coaches used to take on extra horses here for the steep climb up the hill. Much of its period past is evident inside – in the bar, for example, and in Poachers Dining Area, where you'll find exposed beams, stonework and a large inglenook fireplace. The two other eating areas are the Shropshire Restaurant, overlooking the countryside, and the Rent Room, with pine kitchen-style seating, sofas and more rural views. A typical three-course meal might start with pea and mint risotto; smoked haddock, salmon and spring onion fishcake; or Cajun chicken salad; then chef’s pie of the day; wholetail breaded scampi, chunky chips and garden peas; or pork medallions stuffed with apricots and sage; and finally, chocolate brownie and chocolate sauce. The wine list, selected by a local merchant, includes a range of fine ports, Armagnacs and Cognacs.
