A homely place to stop awhile

Standing at the end of the 268-mile-long Pennine Way walk, this 18th-century former coaching inn is a welcoming and most hospitable place to revive after any journey, be it on foot or by car. The menu features local game and farm meats, perhaps washed down with ales from the Hadrian & Border Brewery. Try spicy Cajun chicken tortilla wrap; vegetable nut roast with herb-scented couscous salad, or a selection of hot open sandwiches. Leave space for sticky date and walnut pudding. The stone-flagged bar has a log fire, and the conservatory dining room looks over the patio and beer garden.
