On the village green, at the northern end of the Pennine Way, this part-thatched, former coaching inn dates from 1750. The menu features local game and farm meats, worth considering accompanied by a Hadrian Border Brewery beer. Try a home-made burger, or perhaps gammon steak with honey-sautéed pineapple chunks; or breaded Whitby scampi with salad and chips. The stone-flagged bar has a log fire, and the conservatory dining room overlooks the patio and garden.
