Popular local, destination eatery, enchanting waterside garden

The delightfully large garden bordering the idyllic Ale Water is a huge factor in the favour of this 200-year-old pub, now with new owners. Others are the Front Bar – proudly unrefurbished for over a century – which serves ales from the Scottish Borders Brewery including Foxy Blonde and Dark Horse. Borders ingredients are the cornerstone of the seasonally-tuned kitchen here. A starter of traditional Scottish Cullen skink might lead on to a main course of game pie packed with local venison, pheasant, rabbit and pigeon. Finish with panettone bread and butter pudding and vanilla ice cream.
