One of the oldest pubs in town, the cosy, matchboarded front bar has scrubbed tables, an open fire and Brakspear Brewery prints from a bygone era. Successfully run by Mark and Sandra Duggan, this is a bustling drinking and dining spot. From the cosy and intimate dining room, a passageway leads to the suntrap terrace garden. Freshly sourced local produce (the butcher is only next door) underpins menus both traditional and modern – salt and chilli squid with saffron aïoli; pan-fried calves’ liver, bacon and onions; and a chargrilled 8oz rib-eye steak with home-cut chips. There is live music every Sunday evening in the front bar.
