Great community local with fine pies

You can't miss the hanging sign for this quirky suburban pub – look for a 1950s grocer's bike swinging high above Magdalen Road's pavement. Inside the design is decidedly eccentric and Edwardian. This is a community pub in a very cosmopolitan part of the city, with the ambition of catering for all-comers. The plan appears to work well, with grand beers from owners Arkell's Brewery and carefully chosen guests coupled with a menu that is both traditional and eclectic. Look for burgers (including cod, pulled pork and black bean and mushroom varieties); sourdough pizzas (meat-eaters, vegetarian and vegans catered for), snacks and salads. Bareboard floors, amusing signage, real fires and eclectic furnishing, this is one to discover and savour at length.
