Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this friendly pub is a busy place, with plenty going on. There are regular charity ‘tractor runs’ and barbecues in the summer, live music monthly, and themed dining evenings, as well as beer festivals in May and October. You’ll find very well-kept Brakspear ales here, and guests too, and the classic pub menu, with ingredients sourced locally where possible, might feature pan-fried scallops with chilli jam; or potted Devon crab with ginger and spring onion; and mains such as wild mushroom pie; or pork belly with chorizo, black pudding, leek hash and a fried duck egg; with sticky toffee pudding to finish. Their philosophy? ‘We’re a pub that serves food, not a restaurant that serves beer.’
