Popular with walkers because of its routes from Minster Lovell and the Windrush River, this 18th-century village pub is located just outside Witney. Oak beams and Cotswold-stone walls are reminders of the pub’s vintage, although a BBQ and brick pizza oven in the garden indicate a more contemporary approach to hospitality. Ales brewed nearby can be found on the hand pumps, with Somerset cider also on tap, perhaps with a bar snack of home-made pork scratchings or chilli rice crackers. Local produce drives the menu, from a starter of Carney goats’ cheese, poached pear, gingerbread, beetroot and truffle honey to a main course of Butt’s Farm rare breed pork belly, creamed cabbage and bacon, mustard, champ potatoes, rhubarb and cider gravy. Leave space for one of the comforting puddings – perhaps dark chocolate with roasted banana, bayleaf ice cream and lime.
