Slaggyford has no shop or school, but when the South Tynedale Railway, currently being restored, reaches the village it will again have a station and its first trains since 1976. Thankfully, it already has the 18th-century Kirkstyle Inn, named after the stile into the adjacent churchyard and blessed with wonderful views of the river. In winter a log fire heats the bar, where among the real ales are Yates Best Bitter and a summer brew named after the inn. On the menu are the very popular local sausages with Alston honey mustard as well as classic British pub dishes, like lasagne; steak and ale pie; and cod and chips. Friday is steak night.
