Part 12th century, this solid-looking, stone-built former coaching inn sympathetically accommodates 21st century needs. The bar area is spacious, with original wood and stonework, open log fires and comfortable chairs. Ales come from local breweries such as Allendale, Alnwick and Firebrick, while wines come from further afield – all over the world, in fact. Light and main meals are available at lunchtime; in the evening look for crab and lobster ravioli; twice-cooked belly pork; and tomato and red onion tarte Tatin. The Stanegate Room celebrates local arts and crafts. An outside seating area looks over the surrounding countryside.
