When Ian Simmons bought this 19th-century, stone-built pub it was in a bad way, with heavy shutters on the windows and doors, having closed down no less than three times in five years. But with his dedication and strong local support, The White Swan really is making a name for itself. Beer drinkers will find Sharp's Doom Bar and Fuller's London Pride. On the menu, start with goats' cheese and caramelised onion bruschetta; or pan-fried scallops with black pudding bon bons; then continue with boeuf bourguignon; venison cottage pie; smoked haddock, chive mash and poached egg; or mushroom, brie and cranberry Wellington with fennel and leek croquette. Young ones can choose from their own dedicated menu.
