This Tudor coaching inn stands in the shadow of Middleham’s ruined castle in the cobbled market square and, like the village, is steeped in the history of the turf, with several top horseracing stables located in the area. Oak beams, flagstones and roaring log fires all feature in the atmospheric bar, where you can quaff tip-top Black Sheep or Wensleydale ales. Using quality Yorkshire produce the menu features modern Italian and English dishes – perhaps pappardelle al cinghiale (gorgonzola pasta parcels with wine and thyme sauce); coniglio (braised rabbit with vegetable risotto); a pizza; or a chargrilled rib-eye steak served plain or with red wine sauce.
