Using a false name, highwayman Dick Turpin stayed at this ancient inn which stands in a quiet corner of the market square and was one of the main stopping points for travellers on the long road between London and the North. Today you have to turn off the A1(M), but it’s well worth it to discover an inn built in 1258 that retains its ancient beams, low ceilings and roaring open fires, not to mention one that also gives houseroom to the supposed ghosts of a monk, a blacksmith, a cavalier and a small boy. Tony Burgess is the landlord and the man responsible for high standards that exclude anything electronic which makes a noise, so settle back and enjoy a pint of Timothy Taylor Boltmaker, a guest ale from the Rudgate’s brewery or a glass of wine from the list that shows all the signs of careful compilation. The hot and cold sandwich selection in the bar is wide (Cajun chicken; smoked frankfurter; and roast pork and apple being just three), while in the dining room expect a good choice of traditional pub food on menus such as home-made mince and onion pie; tenderloin of pork, new potatoes, seasonal vegetables with pink peppercorn and cream sauce; battered king prawns with sweet chilli dip; pork sausages, creamy mash and onion gravy; and gammon steak, fried egg, chips and salad. Frequently changing blackboard specials widen the choice to include halibut steak with smoked salmon and fresh prawns in white wine sauce; and wild button mushroom ragout with fresh salad. Possible followers are apple pie and custard, or chocolate fudge cake
