Owned by TV chef Chris Coubrough, this 17th-century former coaching inn overlooks a tree-lined green. Contemporary decor blends effortlessly with the bar’s ancient beams and other old-world charms, leaving the modern marketing punnery of Fakenham brewer Jo Coubrough ('the bird who brews') to bring you back to the future with real ales called Bitter Old Bustard and Knot Just Another IPA. Whether you eat in the bar, the restaurant, the Orangery, or outside with its great views, the menus offer modern British and internationally influenced dishes. Gluten, meat and dairy free dishes are handily collected into dedicated menus. A selection of options include starters like quail eggs and curried mayonnaise; or butternut, cranberry and brie filo parcel with Cumberland sauce; and mains like Holkham venison with butternut and ginger risotto and buttered kale; or seared sea bass with crab, fennel and lemon linguine. There could be cinnamon apple puff with ice cream; or kiwi and passionfruit Pavlova with fruit coulis for afters.
