This enchanting, brick-and-flint built inn sits beneath trees at the fringe of the grounds of Norwich’s Anglican Cathedral, the builders of which lodged at the pub, licensed since 1249. It’s a refreshing step back in time, free of electronic diversions whilst rich with beers from Woodforde’s and Wolf breweries; spirits here include ghosts of lingering, long-gone former locals. Who can blame them when the food is as rewarding as the ales; visitors resting on a tour of Norwich’s finest can expect no-nonsense quality pub classics like filled large Yorkshire pudding, trawlerman’s pie, home-made curry or chilli. The hanging basket displays are stunning.
