Just minutes away from Oxford Street and Marble Arch, this classy, six-storey pub is full of period features including open fireplaces, oak floors and solid oak bars. The name is not mere whimsy; goats did once graze around here because the first Lady Portman was allergic to cow’s milk. Expect modern British, seasonal cooking – maybe chilli salt squid, smoked chilli and lime dressing; or the pub’s own house-cured meats with marinated olives, bocconcini, spiced apple chutney and tomato relish (to share), followed by hot-smoked salmon, potato and caper salad, lemon confit and horseradish dressing; cottage pie, chantenay carrots and gravy; or roast pheasant, sweet potato dauphinoise, kale, bread sauce and pomegranate jus. For dessert – Yorkshire rhubarb with white chocolate, cashew macaron; or chocolate tart, poached pear and hazelnut. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors are opened in warmer weather for alfresco dining.
