The Fox & Grapes' success from day one was more or less assured by the pedigree of its chefs. Step inside to a large open-plan interior of parquet flooring, wood panelling, scrubbed wooden tables. Certainly you can enjoy a pint of Doom Bar or Wye Valley, as many dog-walkers do, or consult the wine carte for the small selection of sustainable, organic and biodynamic wines. But award-winning cooking remains the prime attraction, so booking is advisable. A typical dinner menu offers oak-smoked mackerel rillettes, red onion jam and granary toast; and ham hock terrine, beetroot and horseradish tapenade. Followed by roasted duck breast, smoked onion purée, and figs roasted in prosciutto; or seared salmon fillet, white wine and mussel velouté, peas and samphire.
