It 1086, William the Conqueror's Domesday Book noted that a path of coggles, or cobbles, ran through the area. Half a millennium later, politician Sir Henry Cholmeley, whose descendants still live in the village, bought the Easton Estate, which owns the inn, and whose 'lost' walled gardens are worth visiting. There'll be no need to puzzle over mysterious culinary terms on the comprehensive, clear-cut menu, so start with traditional smoked haddock and prawn chowder; or melon with fresh fruits and mango sorbet. Then move easily into lambs' liver with creamy mash potato and caramelised onion gravy; fresh Grimsby haddock with either garden or mushy peas, chips and salad; or Mediterranean roasted vegetable bake topped with mozzarella. When the Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall visited the inn and associated farm shop in connection with His Royal Highness's Pub is the Hub initiative, they presented the landlords, John and Lesley Berry, with a commemorative barrel top.
