Country dining pub in charming surroundings

Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire all meet not far from this 17th-century coaching inn overlooking the village cricket pitch. From here you can see Belvoir Castle, a mile or so away. Five real fires warm the interior, and a well-stocked bar does a good line in real ales. Dine in the Snug & Bar, the contemporary Dining Room or the Bakehouse Restaurant, which still features the oven from village bakery days. On the menu may be grilled mackerel fillet, aubergine purée, cucumber, olive and celery salsa; and pan-fried duck breast, beetroot and spring onion mash, confit orange and braised chicory. Representing the pub classics category are home-made pies; beer-battered fish; and sausages, mash and onion gravy. Typical puddings are apple and berry crumble with custard, and lemon meringue pie with raspberry sorbet.
