Hercules was an 18th-century racehorse and – the story goes – his ‘revival’ has led to him becoming an innkeeper – described as a ‘strong silent type and rarely seen’. Whether or not it’s run by a horse, this 17th-century inn has undergone its own revival; there's a relaxed bar and simple dining on the ground floor, with a cosy and elegant restaurant upstairs. Local producers supply pretty much everything. A winter evening menu might include a seafood platter for grazing, as well as classics like slow-braised beef with cheddar mash, hot pickled red cabbage and bacon; or maybe teriyaki salmon, carrot, ginger and potato rösti, with toasted sesame and broccoli.
