Open all year

Overlooking Kent's largest village green, the four-century-old Wheelwrights really deserves to be called a quintessential English pub. A cliché perhaps, but apart from being exceptionally pretty, its qualifications also include seven weekly changing real ales, a cider from the village and an impressive range of gins. For an idea of what food to expect, take pressing of duck leg with prunes, pistachios and pickled fennel; roast rump of lamb with confit breast, makhani sauce with cashews, Bombay aloo, lamb samosa and raita; and spiced Yorkshire rhubarb with meringue, rhubarb sponge and home-made stem ginger and rhubarb ice cream. A worthy fish alternative would be pan-roast loin of cod and clams.
