Kentish hops drape the beams in this lively old pub, which dates from 1665 and is known for its good quality menu and the sometimes unusual real ales. The oak-shaded terrace overlooks a corner of the immense village green and cricket pitch, great for those long summer evenings. The kitchens were once the village gaol; escaping from them today are freshly-prepared dishes with a distinct nod towards Scottish beef – the steaks are impressive, from the 28- to 35-day dry-aged rib-eye to the 28-day dry-aged fillet. For dessert, try the apple tarte Tatin or banoffee pie.
