Creeper-clad stone gables and arched windows mark out this imposing building as something special. There’s a touch of Victorian Gothic about this eye-catching pub, built originally as a hunting lodge. The grandeur remains inside too, with open fires, bare boards, scrubbed old tables and a hop-bine dressed bar groaning with venerable hand pumps. The separate clubroom has comfy settees, log-burner and a baby grand just itching to be played. It’s a popular destination for seafood lovers, with ever-changing dishes filling the specials board. A starter of duck rillettes; or half a pint of shell-on prawns could be followed by grilled skate wing with caper butter; or whole crab salad. If you really want to push the boat out, and the time of year is right, ask for the fruits de mer – just give the chef 24 hours’ notice. Drinkers are rewarded with a fine cellar, plus a selection of Kentish ales and ciders.
